Kerr: Evans’ shot will come around

The sample size is small, but Warriors rookie Jacob Evans has done little to ease concerns about his shot.

Evans is 2-for-7 from the field in six games. Not once has Evans attempted a threepointer.

“The good thing with Jacob is he shot the ball pretty well in college, and he’s got a nice touch,” Golden State head coach Steve Kerr said Friday. “He’s putting in a ton of work, and it’s going to get better. That’s what happens when it becomes your job, and you just shoot over and over every day.”

Evans has yet to crack Golden State’s rotation. The only meaningful minutes he has received this season was a six-minute cameo in Sunday’s win in Brooklyn.

The problem is that, though he is an NBA-caliber defender who can guard multiple positions, Evans’ offense is still raw. Evans shot 42.9 percent from the field — including 37.7 percent from three-point range — in three seasons at Cincinnati, but he has had a tough time adjusting to NBA defenses.

At summer leagues in Sacramento and Las Vegas, Evans shot a combined 32.4 percent from the field and 11.1 percent from three-point range. The good news for Golden State, however, is that there is no major issue with his shooting form.

“I plug in (Evans) occasionally for defensive purposes, and he does a really nice job,” Kerr said. “I think that’s what attracted us to him in the first place was the fact that he’s got the size and strength to match up across the board in an NBA game, can guard multiple spots.

“But it’s his rookie year. Just like (Kevon Looney), DJ (Damian Jones) and Jordan Bell, you kind of go through these seasons where you’re figuring everything out and you’re doing so playing behind a lot of guys who’ve been around the block.” No shootaround: The Warriors typically hold a morning shootaround when they have a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. However, Kerr canceled Friday’s after talking with assistant coach Chris DeMarco.

“DeMarco came to me yesterday and said he thought it would be a good day to have a day off from shootaround,” Kerr said. “He’s got a good feel for our guys and for our team. Sounded like a good idea, so we did it. Half the guys showed up, anyway, to get some shots up, but it’s a good way to change the routine.”
