Mandelman, Haney win; 3 supe races open
With tens of thousands of votes left to count, the frontrunners in the San Francisco Board of Supervisors races remain Catherine Stefani in District Two, Gordon Mar in District Four and Shamann Walton in District 10.
Meanwhile, Matt Haney in District Six and current Supervisor Rafael Mandelman in District Eight — who both beat their competitors by thousands of votes — have been declared winners.
The results are based on Wednesday’s tally of San Francisco’s ranked-choice system, which allows voters to designate their second and third choices. The department counted 235,393 ballots by Wednesday, but still has about 125,000 left.
John Arntz, director of the San Francisco Department of Elections, said Tuesday’s election has the potential to be the highest midterm election turnout since at least 1954.
Current District Two Supervisor Stefani held the lead Wednesday with 53 percent of the vote to BART Director Nick Josefowitz’s 47 percent. There were 1,374 votes separating them.
In District Four, Mar, a longtime neighborhood activist, held a wide lead over Jessica Ho, Supervisor Katy Tang’s legislative aide, for the open seat. He captured 56 percent of the vote to her 44 percent. There were 1,733 votes separating them.
In District 10, Shamann Walton held 63 percent over Tony Kelly’s 37 percent. There were 3,133 votes between them.
