Sabathia says ’19 season to be his last

-

Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia, who agreed to a one-year, $8 million deal Tuesday, said Wednesday that the 2019 season will be his last.

“This will be it,” Sabathia, 38, said in a video on Twitter.

A six-time All-Star and the 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner, Sabathia went 9-7 with a 3.65 ERA in 29 starts this year. The Vallejo native had surgery on his right knee for the fourth time last month.

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez will have surgery on his left shoulder in the next week, which could slow him during spring training but is not likely to keep him out of the lineup on Opening Day, the team said.

Briefly: Multiple sources told the Associated Press that Seattle is close to a deal to send catcher Mike Zunino and outfielder Guillermo Heredia to Tampa Bay in exchange for outfielder Mallex Smith . ... The White Sox extended manager Rick Renteria’s contract. General manager Rick Hahn did not give specifics other than the extension goes past 2019, when Renteria’s original three-year deal was set to end. ... The Dodgers exercised their option on manager Dave Roberts’ contract for 2019 while continuing to work on a longterm deal with him . ... The Braves said shortstop Dansby Swanson is expected to be ready for spring training after surgery on his left wrist. Swanson had a procedure Monday to remove what the Braves called a “loose body” in the wrist.
