Ready, set ... run, run, run
Now that the midterms are over, all eyes in the political world turn to the 2020 presidential race. There is no doubt there will be California Democrats in the mix — the only question is how many. Let’s take inventory: Kamala Harris has been projected as a contender from the day she was sworn in as the state’s junior senator, and nothing she has done since then has dispelled that notion. Her memoir will be out early next year, a mandatory primer for the masses. Gavin Newsom? Not this time.
Quoting an unnamed source, Politico posted a story Thursday claiming Rep. Eric Swalwell is “definitely running.” My source close to Swalwell said that is definitely premature. But Swalwell sure sounded ready to roll in a chat with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Friday. His Iowa roots give him a head start over other left coasters going to the heartland. Add L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, impeach-Trump-cheerleader Tom Steyer and self-promotion-maestro Michael Avenatti to the mentionables. California moved up its primary to March 3, 2020, which helps explain the great state of ambition.
