San Jose State (1-8, 1-4 Mountain West) at No. 14 Utah State (8-1, 5-0)
When: 1 p.m. Saturday Where: Logan, Utah Radio: 1590
Story line: The Spartans have three chances to match last season’s total of two wins, but they don’t appear to have much of a chance against 14th-ranked Utah State. The Aggies opened their season with a 38-31 loss at Michigan State — and have not lost since then. Only once during their eight-game winning streak have they scored fewer than 42 points. Utah State has beaten the Spartans seven straight times, including a 61-10 romp in San Jose last year.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
This is the rare matchup of J. Love quarterbacks. The Spartans’ Josh Love, a junior, has completed 56.9 percent of his passes this season and is averaging 250.4 passing yards per game. The Aggies’ Jordan Love, a sophomore, has completed 65.1 percent of his passes and is averaging 242.8 passing yards per game. Josh Love has thrown only seven interceptions in 253 pass attempts but he needs to be particularly careful against the Utah State defense. The Aggies are tied for fourth in the nation with 14 interceptions. And catch this: They’re tied with Alabama and Michigan for the most interceptions returned for a touchdown with four. San Jose State gave up 424 rushing yards in its 24-9 loss at Wyoming last week. The Spartans face a balanced run game by the Aggies. Darwin Thompson has gained 702 yards on 93 carries (7.5 yards per carry) and has run for 13 touchdowns. Fellow junior Gerold Bright has gained 634 yards on 101 carries (6.3 ypc) and has run for seven TDs.
