Louisville dismisses head coach Petrino

-

Louisville’s seven-game skid was bad enough. Worse were the large margins of defeat. That combination spelled the end of head coach Bobby Petrino’s second chapter with the Cardinals.

Louisville fired Petrino on Sunday with two games left in a spiraling season that includes five blowout losses in which the Cardinals (2-8) allowed at least 50 points, including Friday’s 54-23 loss at No. 12 Syracuse.

Second-year safeties coach Lorenzo Ward, 51, will coach Louisville on an interim basis.

Also let go were quarterbacks coach Nick Petrino, the coach’s son; linebackers coach Ryan Beard, defensive line coach L.D. Scott and fifthyear director of football operations Andy Wagner.

Petrino, 57, departs with a 77-35 mark in two stints with Louisville, including 36-26 since returning in 2014. Book back for Irish: Notre Dame said Ian Book, the 6-foot, 208pound junior quarterback who led the No. 3 Irish to six straight victories before suffering a rib injury at Northwestern two weeks ago, will practice Tuesday and, if there are no setbacks, reclaim his starting spot over Brandon Wimbush. San Mateo 32, CCSF 29: In a game postponed a day because of the Northern California wildfires, Jalen Lampley returned the second half kickoff 96 yards to give the host Bulldogs (8-2, 5-0 Bay 6) the lead for good, and CSM completed a perfect Bay 6 League season.

The No. 4-state-ranked Bulldogs are tentatively slated to begin defense of their Northern California title Saturday at No. 6 Laney College (8-2, 4-1) in Oakland. No. 8 Fresno City College (8-2) visits No. 3 Butte College (9-1) in the other region semifinal. No. 5 CCSF (7-3, 3-2) will miss the playoffs but is expected to host a bowl game Saturday.
