Bishop stymies Sharks

-

The Sharks had plenty of shots Friday night. What they lacked was an answer for Stars goalie Ben Bishop.

Though San Jose outshot host Dallas, it was the Stars who skated away with a 3-2 victory as Bishop made a season-high 41 saves.

“Ben Bishop’s the reason why we won that game,” Dallas coach Jim Montgomery said. “We were bad in the first, and thank God, Ben Bishop wasn’t.”

The game was tied at 1 before Miro Heiskanen scored from the top of the right faceoff circle 4:38 into the third. Brett Ritchie got his second of the season at 6:26, making it 3-1 Dallas.

Evander Kane and Logan Couture scored for San Jose. Erik Karlsson had two assists, and Martin Jones stopped 27 shots.

The Sharks were coming off consecutive wins against Montreal and Carolina.

“We wanted to build on that,” coach Peter DeBoer said. “I loved our first period. Bishop, I thought, kept it from being two or three at the end of the first.”

Kane said his team was too relaxed. “One-goal leads, twogoal leads, teams are coming back on us because we’re not finishing,” he said. “We need to ramp up the intensity.”

The Sharks dominated the first period, outshooting Dallas 13-5. San Jose nearly scored 1:14 into the game when Timo Meier’s shot from the slot hit the right post.

At 9:22, Kane took a pass from Karlsson on the inside edge of the left circle and slid the puck inside the left post for his eighth goal. Hurricanes 4, Ducks 1: Brett Pesce scored the tie-breaking goal early in the third period and Carolina ended Anaheim’s five-game winning streak.

Justin Williams also scored in the third period and Petr Mrazek made 18 saves in his first victory since Oct. 26 as the Hurricanes won in Anaheim for just the second time in nine years. Oilers 7, Wild 2: Leon Draisaitl scored twice and Connor McDavid had a goal and three assists for host Edmonton.

Cam Talbot made 31 saves to earn back-to-back victories after dropping his six previous starts. Blues 1, Jets 0: Jake Allen made 26 saves and recorded his first shutout of the season for visiting St. Louis. Alex Steen scored during a second-period power play.
