Wide array of activities to honor black history

- — Emma Heath

February may be designated Black History Month, but there’s no such thing as celebrating too early.

On Friday, Jan. 18, the Merced Branch Library plans a button-making session in which participants can make images that celebrate African American history.

The festivities extend through Feb. 27 and include book readings, musical performances and movie screenings, with the aim of honoring the history, culture and heritage of African Americans in the region and beyond.

Whether at the reading of Queen Latifah’s children’s book, the “Conversation on Blackness” panel, or Spike Lee’s “BlaKkKlansman,” it will be an opportunity to learn, reflect and converse about race and advocacy.

The celebration also includes free daylong events, like the Black & Brown Comix Art Festival on Sunday, Jan. 20, and prolonged exhibitions like the Main Library’s “Unsung Heroes,” which runs through April 11.
