2018’s injured mostly healthy again

- By Henry Schulman

The Giants will assemble for spring training next week in relatively good health. The players whose injuries and surgeries turned the latter half of 2018 into a nightmare all are said to be healthy, although a few will be on restricted duty early in camp.

Manager Bruce Bochy mentioned catcher Buster Posey, pitcher Jeff Samardzija and outfielder Steven Duggar specifically.

A rundown:

Posey (hip surgery) has been hitting in the cage at Oracle Park and said he will catch his first bullpen session when he arrives in Arizona on Monday or Tuesday.

Samardzija (shoulder injury) has thrown three full-speed bullpen sessions, using all of his pitches, and plans a fourth Monday or Tuesday. He is reporting no pain.

Duggar (dislocated left shoulder), who had surgery in September, said he has ramped up his hitting beyond 75 percent and sometimes goes a little harder than he is asked. He also is throwing without issues.

Outfielder Mac Williamson (concussion) said he finally stopped feeling the effects of his April collision with a wall in mid-September and then began hitting, sooner than he ordinarily would after a normal season. He said he has remained free of symptoms, which got better then worsened last summer.

Second baseman Joe Panik (left thumb sprain, right groin strain) said he is 100 percent healthy.

First baseman Brandon Belt (right knee surgery) did not attend Friday’s FanFest media day because his son was sick, but Bochy said Belt is ready to go and will get time in the outfield this spring.

Pitcher Johnny Cueto continues to rehab his pitching elbow after Tommy John surgery and will be out for most or all of 2019.

Infielder Pablo Sandoval, who suffered a season-ending hamstring injury in August, is expected to be a full springtraining participant.
