Curry’s mom shows off her own 3-point shooting skill
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Warriors guard Stephen Curry has come to master trick shots, but it was his mother, Sonya, who pulled off the did-that-just-happen moment Friday night.
As part of a Curry Family Foundation event unveiling the refurbished Carole Hoefener Center, four teams — Stephen and his wife, Ayesha; Seth Curry and his fiancee, Callie Rivers; Sydel Curry and her husband, Golden State guard Damion Lee; and Sonya and her husband, former NBA sharpshooter Dell Curry — had to make a layup, a free throw, a three-pointer and a half-court shot.
With her group running low on time, Sonya hit an underhand halfcourt shot, sending the Curry family into a frenzy. Attendees roared in the small gym in which Stephen once practiced as a child.
Before the Curry Family Foundation refurbished it, the court was in bad shape. The floor now looks new, with a huge white No. 30 at midcourt,
and a painting of Dell, Stephen and Seth overlooking it.
“Obviously, for it being All-Star Weekend and how much Charlotte’s meant to our family, we have an opportunity to kind of give back and really celebrate what this community has meant to us, and how we can kind of leave an imprint beyond this weekend,” Stephen said before the event. “I’m excited to kind of unveil what this whole center has to offer and kind of shine the light on this city the best way we can.”
The event at the Hoefener Center was just part of a jam-packed All-Star weekend for the Curry family. Besides competing in Saturday night’s 3-point contest against Seth and starting Sunday’s All-Star Game, Stephen plans to attend Friday night’s Davidson-St. Joseph’s game, his high school’s state tournament game Saturday afternoon and a Sunday morning ceremony honoring his dad.
During his media availability Friday, Curry hinted that his dad would make a cameo at the 3-point contest.
“I doubt he’ll be in the 3-point contest,” Curry said, “but there may be something happening (Saturday). I’m not sure if the plans have been finalized.”
