Ex-S.F. reliever Romo inks deal with Marlins
Ex-Giants reliever and San Francisco fan favorite Sergio Romo has found a new home.
The right-hander and the Marlins on Friday completed a one-year contract that guarantees Romo $2.5 million. He can earn an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses for games finished as part of the deal announced Friday: $50,000 each for 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 games finished.
Romo, 35, was 3-4 with a 4.14 ERA last year for Tampa Bay with 25 saves in 33 chances.
Romo was a 2013 All-Star for San Francisco and helped the Giants to World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014. He has a 2.86 career ERA in 638 relief appearances and five starts during 11 major-league seasons.
Farquhar wears protective cap: Danny Farquhar wore a specially designed protective cap during his first spring training bullpen session with the Yankees.
Farquhar collapsed in the White Sox dugout on April 20 after pitching in the sixth inning against Houston. He was diagnosed with a ruptured aneurysm and brain hemorrhage, had surgery the next day and was hospitalized until May 7. Farquhar was not cleared to pitch again in 2018, became a free agent after the season and signed a minorleague deal with the Yankees.
“I am extraordinarily just thankful,” Farquhar said.
He met with doctors and trainers at Steinbrenner Field on Monday to design his hat, which includes Kevlar and foam. After a proper fit was found, it took two days to create the final product.
Severino deal: Right-hander Luis Severino avoided an arbitration hearing with the Yankees, agreeing to a fouryear, $40 million contract.
The deal includes a team option for 2023 that could make the agreement worth $52.25 million for five seasons.
Severino has thrown at least 191 innings each of the last two seasons and posted a combined ERA of 3.18 across both years. In that stretch, the Yankees were 44-19 in games he started.
Russell talks: Cubs shortstop Addison Russell apologized for the “hurt” and “pain” he caused his ex-wife but didn’t detail what prompted a 40game suspension under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy.
“My past behaviors were wrong and unacceptable,” he said.
Russell met with the media for the first time since being suspended last fall, a penalty he accepted without appeal.
Briefly: The Tigers beat pitcher Michael Fulmer in the final salary arbitration case this year, leaving players with a 6-4 record in decisions.
