A’s ready to call up Bolt, switch-hitting outfielder

PITTSBURGH — The A’s two-man bench is no more: The team will call up outfielder Skye Bolt from Triple-A Las Vegas for the three-game series at Pittsburgh that starts Friday.

Whenever he gets into a game, Bolt, 25, will be making his big-league debut.

With his recent play, it was clear that Bolt was a major consideration for a roster spot once the A’s shifted from the nine-man bullpen necessitated by Lou Trivino’s thumb injury. Bolt, a switch hitter who can play all three outfield spots, is batting .325 with six homers at Las Vegas, a major difference from this time last year, when Bolt was struggling at Double-A Midland. He eventually was demoted to Class A Stockton and had to work his way back into the team’s good graces.

Reliever Ryan Dull was optioned back to Las Vegas to make room for Bolt; Dull put up a 10.29 ERA in six games, including allowing three homers in his seven innings of work.

The A’s do not have any other moves planned before the series begins at PNC Park.

Utilityman Franklin Barreto, who had several stints with the A’s last season, is batting .200 after going 1-for-4 for Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday and has played just three games in the outfield, getting the bulk of his time at second base and shortstop. First baseman Matt

Olson, on a rehab assignment with Las Vegas, is 0-for-7 for the Aviators in two games after going 0-for-4 Thursday. .

Because the series is at a National League park, the A’s will go from a two-man bench to four potential subs: Khris Davis, typically a designated hitter, will be playing left when he’s in the lineup, pushing

Robbie Grossman or Chad Pinder to the bench. Pinder is likely to continue to get some playing time at second base, given Jurickson Profar’s struggles in the field and at the plate.

The A’s will not change their rotation; despite days off Thursday and Monday, all the starters will remain on turn.
