MIAMI — If you want your Will Smith baseball card signed, you better send it to the right place.

The Giants’ closer opened an envelope in spring training to find an autograph request on a baseball card depicting Dodgers catching prospect Will Smith.

“I signed it, ‘Wrong one. Go Giants!’ and I sent it back,” Smith said.

Now, there is a chance Will Smith will pitch to Will Smith when the Dodgers visit San Francisco, June 7-9. They promoted their Smith, a 2016 firstrounder, on Sunday to replace catcher Austin Barnes, who went on the 10-day injured list with a groin injury.

Hey, Giants, how about getting the entertainer Will

Smith to toss out the ceremonial first pitch? The Fresh Prince of China Basin.

Asked if he looked forward to such a matchup, the Giants’ Smith said, “Sure, why not? It would be the first time a Will Smith pitched to a Will Smith, right?”

Right. Only two other Smiths with the variation of the first name William are listed among the 165 Smiths that Baseball Reference lists, and none of the three careers overlapped. It could be four. One pitcher who allowed 11 runs in his only major-league game, for the Baltimore Monumentals in 1884, is listed only as “Smith.”

With Smith being the most popular surname in the United States, one suspects the Giants’ lefty pitched to a number of Smiths in his big-league career, but he faced just one, nowretired Seth Smith, whom he got out twice in 2014.

Nine Smiths currently play in the majors, the Dodgers' Will included. Caleb Smith pitches for the Marlins, raising the possibility of Smith beating Smith in the current series.
