Another chance for Beede

MIAMI — Tyler Beede has been two pitchers this year, a beast who has dominated the hitting-crazy Pacific Coast League in seven starts (2.34 ERA) and a hittable pitcher in three major-league games (13.50 ERA).

The Giants cannot move away from Beede’s superb stuff, and continue to believe he can harness it with more experience, which is why he will get Thursday’s start against the Marlins over Dereck Rodriguez, who will continue to pitch in relief.

“Dereck can help us out of the ’pen,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “He did a nice job in San Francisco. He’s a guy who’s going to help us in long relief, maybe short. We felt like this was the best way to go.”

Beede believes he took a step forward in his most recent big-league game when he pitched 21⁄3 innings of relief against Toronto on May 14, after he had surrendered nine earned runs over 41⁄3 innings in two prior games, including a start at Cincinnati.

The 2014 first-rounder said the key is being consistent from first pitch to last and trusting that the stuff that has made him one of the best pitchers in the minors also can get big-league hitters out if he pounds the strike zone.

“I don’t need to be bigger than the moment I’m pitching in,” Beede said. “I need to just stay calm, execute pitches and not give the hitters too much credit.”

Bochy expressed optimism that Beede, who turned 26 on May 23, can succeed once he feels “a sense of comfort, a sense of belonging,” which takes some pitchers longer than others to achieve.

“The equipment is there,” Bochy said. Vincent to IL: Nick Vincent joined fellow relievers Trevor Gott and Travis Bergen on the 10-day injured list after an MRI exam confirmed he sustained a strained right pectoral muscle while throwing a pitch in Tuesday night’s 11-3 loss. Bochy estimated the long reliever will be out two to three weeks.

The club recalled 27-year-old lefty Williams Jerez from Triple-A for the second time. Condolences: President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi issued a statement on the passing of Heather Holmes, wife of Giants amateur scouting director Michael Holmes. She died of breast cancer Wednesday morning.

“We send our love and deepest sympathies to Michael and his family and are keeping them in our thoughts,” Zaidi said.
