D’backs top Phillies in Home Run Derby
The Arizona Diamondbacks played Home Run Derby in Philadelphia and won big.
The Diamondbacks hit three home runs to open the game and finished with a team-record eight in a 13-8 win over the Phillies in a homer-happy game Monday night.
Scott Kingery hit two of Philadelphia’s five home runs for the combined MLB record of 13 homers in one game.
On most nights, five would be enough to win. But not Monday in hot Philly, where Arizona turned it into extended batting practice.
Jarrod Dyson, Ketel Marte and David Peralta went deep off Jerad Eickhoff to start the game.
“With the way we’ve been swinging the bats, you never know,” Dyson said. “We’re just trying to keep that going.”
The Diamondbacks kept it going, going, gone. Eduardo Escobar became the first Diamondback to homer from different sides of the plate in consecutive innings. Ildemaro Vargas also homered twice and Alex Avila went deep as well.
Eickhoff (3-4) allowed two more two-run homers before he was chased in the fourth inning with Arizona up 7-3. The Diamondbacks hit two more homers in the fifth to set a club record with seven.
Eickhoff allowed five hits in three-plus innings — all the hits homers, and Arizona won its fifth straight game.
“Home runs happen. Solo home runs happen. What I get frustrated with is the free passes, then the home runs,” Eickhoff said. “The multi-run home runs, those are the ones that kill you. The solos, I could care less about.” Angels 3-3 scored in Anaheim, the 5, Dodgers go-ahead Shohei 3: run Tied Ohtani in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-loaded throwing error by Max Muncy. The Angels’ Mike Trout hit a two-run homer to tie it in the seventh. Rockies 6, Cubs 5: Ryan McMahon had a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning, and Colorado rallied from down 4-0 to beat Chicago and win its ninth straight home game. Colorado’s Ian Desmond, hit a 486-foot homer, the longest of the season so far, and Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon also homered. Rangers 4, Red Sox 3: Danny Santana doubled to lead off the 11th inning for his fourth hit of the game and scored on Elvis Andrus’ single to give visiting Texas the win. Braves 13, Pirates 7: Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a grand slam, Ozzie Albies added two homers and host Atlanta beat Pittsburgh after Pirates starter Joe Musgrove was ejected in a first-inning fracas. Musgrove hit Josh Donaldson with a pitch. Donaldson exchanged words with Musgrove, took steps toward the mound and shoved catcher Elias Díaz, who intervened. Umpires ejected Musgrove and Donaldson. Nationals 12, White Sox 1: Trea Turner homered and Anibal Sanchez pitched into the seventh for visiting Washington. Chicago’s Yoan Moncada left in the seventh with upper back tightness. Cardinals 4, Marlins 1: Michael Wacha pitched six scoreless innings in his return to the rotation as visiting St. Louis broke a three-game losing streak. Wacha, who had been briefly demoted to the bullpen, benefited from three double plays and a pickoff in his first start since May 22. Mets-Yankees, postponed: The scheduled Subway Series opener was postponed because of rain. It will be made up Tuesday as part of a daynight doubleheader. The day game begins at 10:05 a.m. PDT, the nightcap at 4:05 p.m. Briefly: The Cardinals put right-hander Adam Wainwright on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain . ... The Pirates put right-hander Jordan Lyles on the 10-day injured list with tightness in his left hamstring. ... Dallas Keuchel dominated in his first minor-league game since signing with the Atlanta Braves, pitching one-hit ball for seven scoreless innings for Class A Rome . ... The Boston Red Sox will move up the start of Wednesday’s game against Texas by more than three hours to 1:05 p.m. PDT to ease any conflict with Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
