Bochy might manage France in WBC

Vive le Boche? Bruce Bochy has his first opportunity to manage in 2020 and maybe 2021, in the World Baseball Classic, with Team France.

Bochy and third-base coach Ron Wotus met in New York last week with a delegation from the French baseball federation, led by president Didier Seminet, who tried to sell Bochy on managing the team in the fifth WBC. France would have to win a qualifying round next spring to reach the 16-team tournament in 2021.

Bochy was born in Landes de Bussac, France, where his father was stationed in the army. He is the only Frenchborn manager in major-league history.

Bochy told French baseball officials that he will think about it because it’s a significant commitment, starting in March. The federation also talked to Wotus about joining the staff.

“We had a great conversation,” Bochy said. “It wasn’t something I said no to right away. I really enjoyed his presentation.

“France is trying to get a little more involved in baseball. This would be part of it. I think anytime you can do something to promote the game and be an ambassador to the game, I think that’s a good thing.”

The French failed to qualify ahead of the tournaments held in 2013 and 2017, losing four of their combined five games. Young update: Pitching coach Curt Young remains in Arizona recuperating from an operation to flush an infection from his right knee. He will not return to the bench anytime soon.

Bochy said Young, 59, might fly to San Francisco this weekend to visit the team and its doctors. He had the surgery May 31 while the Giants were in Baltimore.

“He had an infection and they didn’t want to wait around,” Bochy said. “There was a sense of urgency getting this done. That’s why he went in when he did.”

Bullpen coach Matt Herges has acted as pitching coach in Young’s absence, with Triple-A pitching coach Steve Kline joining the Giants as temporary bullpen coach. Briefly: The Giants optioned catcher Aramis Garcia to Triple-A with Buster Posey’s activation from the injured list. ... Top outfield prospect Heliot Ramos continues to hit well at Class A San Jose since his return from a knee injury. In Stockton on Tuesday night, Ramos hit his eighth homer in 111 at-bats this season off one of the A’s best prospects, A.J. Puk, who was pitching for the first time since Tommy John surgery 14 months ago.
