Lastplace Orioles romp past Indians
The Baltimore Orioles took the luster off Mike Clevinger’s return from the injured list, scoring seven early runs off the righthander Friday night in a 130 rout of the visiting Cleveland Indians.
Chance Sisco homered and had five RBIs for the Orioles, who built an 80 lead in the second inning and cruised to only their second win in 15 games. With a victory on Saturday, struggling Baltimore would have its first winning streak since May 46 and capture its first series since April 2224.
Like Clevenger, Baltimore starter John Means was activated from the injured list (shoulder) to pitch in this game. Means, however, was far more successful: The lefty allowed one hit and one walk with five strikeouts in five innings.
After notching a total of 25 wins over the previous two seasons, Clevinger was making his fourth start of the season following two stints on the injured list with back and ankle problems.
Rockies 13, Dodgers 9: Pinch-hitter Pat Valaika and David Dahl each homered in an eight-run fifth inning and Nolan Arenado had four hits including a home run as Colorado won at home, snapping a 12-game losing streak to the Dodgers. The Rockies withstood a three-run homer by Max Muncy and a two-run drive by Alex Verdugo to record their first win over the Dodgers since Sept. 8.
Braves 6, Mets 2: Rookie Mike Soroka outpitched Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom, and Atlanta got a two-run homer from fellow youngster Austin Riley in a win in New York. Pete Alonso hit his 28th home run for the Mets, who lost their sixth straight and fell a season-worst nine games under .500 at 37-46.
Marlins 6, Phillies 2: Brian Anderson drove in three runs with a double and his 11th homer, and Miami snapped visiting Philadelphia’s four-game winning streak. The Marlins beat the Phillies for the fourth time in a row.
Rangers 5, Rays 0: Lance Lynn struck out 10 over eight innings of three-hit ball, and visiting Texas extended its winning streak to six games. The right-hander held Tampa Bay without a hit from two outs in the second until Willy Adames opened the eighth with a double.
Blue Jays 6, Royals 2: Eric Sogard hit a tie-breaking home run in the seventh inning, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. homered twice for his second straight multi-homer game and host Toronto snapped a three-game losing streak.
Nationals 3, Tigers 1: Anibal Sanchez beat his former team for his third win in four starts and Juan Soto hit his 14th home run of the season for visiting Washington. Sanchez allowed six hits and struck out eight in six innings. Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth and recorded his first save of the season.
Reds 6, Cubs 3: Cole Hamels left after only one inning because of discomfort in his side and Cincinnati snapped a four-game skid by beating visiting Chicago. Hamels exited after throwing 22 pitches and giving up a walk, two hits and a run in the first inning. He went on the injured list after the game.
White Sox 6, Twins 4: Ross Detwiler earned his first win in nearly three years and host Chicago snapped a seven-game losing streak against Minnesota.
Pirates 3, Brewers 2: Kevin Newman homered and extended his hitting streak to 18 games, and Pittsburgh rallied with two late runs to win in Milwaukee.
Astros 2, Mariners 1: Yuli Gurriel hit a game-ending home run in the 10th inning for Houston. Josh Reddick hit a home run to right in the eighth inning to snap a streak of 17 scoreless innings for the Astros.
Padres 3, Cardinals 1: Fernando Tatis Jr. and Eric Hosmer hit consecutive home runs in the sixth inning off Michael Wacha as San Diego beat visiting St. Louis for its third straight win. The Padres have hit 11 homers in their past three games.
