When the A’s can top the combo of Marco Gonzales and Omar Narváez, they are on a roll, indeed.

The Mariners aren’t having much of a season, but Seattle’s battery has enjoyed great success against Oakland. Narváez homered twice, and Gonzales started briskly before Matt Chapman tripped him up. Chapman singled in two runs in the third, then walloped a tworun homer in the fifth to help down Seattle 92 on Tuesday night at the Coliseum.

The A’s have won five in a row and 11 of their past 12 to move a seasonbest 13 games over .500 (5441). They remained tied with Cleveland for the second wildcard spot.

Chapman, the AllStar third baseman who drove in five runs in all, is on a 12for22 stretch, and is batting .366 with 11 doubles, six homers and 23 RBIs since June 14.

Gonzales entered the day 41 lifetime with a 3.12 ERA against the A’s, including 30 with a 2.57 ERA this season. The only man in the lineup with an average higher than .222 against him entering the day was Chapman, who came in batting .450 off him.

In the third, Josh Phegley led off with the A’s first hit, Marcus Semien doubled to leftcenter and Chapman sent in both with a single to left. In the fifth, Semien walked with two outs and Chapman belted his 22nd homer, a shot to left. Matt Olson followed with a drive to right and a 51 lead.

Ramón Laureano created the next run off Gonzales by doubling with one out in the sixth, stealing third and scoring on Dee Gordon’s throwing error. In the seventh, with Gonzales out of the game and Matt Wisler in, Chapman kept going, following a double by Semien with one of his own for his fifth RBI of the night.

In the eighth, Phegley provided a twoout RBI single to complete Oakland’s scoring.

Daniel Mengden started for Oakland, and other than Narváez’s first homer, his night was superb. Mengden allowed four hits and struck out three while working seven innings, and he didn’t walk a batter in improving to 51.

Mengden has won four consecutive starts and has a 3.38 ERA in that span.

Lou Trivino worked the eighth and Blake Treinen the ninth; Narváez hit a solo shot off him with two outs. It was Narvaez’s fifth home run against Oakland this season in just 42 atbats.

Homeplate umpire Brian O’Nora left the game in the fifth after getting hit in the head by Domingo Santana’s swing two innings earlier.
