Tulowitzki calls it a career

-

Troy Tulowitzki, a Sunnyvale native who was a fivetime AllStar with the Rockies, announced his retirement Thursday.

Tulowitzki, who has missed most of the past two seasons with leg injuries, had been on the injured list with the Yankees.

“For as long as I can remember, my dream was to compete at the highest level as a Major League Baseball player, to wear a bigleague uniform and play hard for my teammates and the fans,” Tulowitzki said in a statement issued by the Yankees. “I will forever be grateful for every day that I’ve had to live out my dream. It has been an absolute honor.”

Tulowitzki finished with a .290 average, 225 homers and 780 RBIs in 13 seasons with Colorado (200615), Toronto (201517) and the Yankees. Injury report: Tampa Bay lefthander Blake Snell, the AL’s reigning Cy Young Award winner, was placed on the injured list and is expected to be sidelined until at least September because of an elbow injury.

The lefthander, who on Monday is to undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his pitching elbow, is 67 with a 4.28 ERA in 20 starts. Those numbers include a 20 record and a 1.64 ERA in four outings since June 30.

“I was upset,” Snell said of his reaction to learning he would need surgery. “Felt like this whole year has kind of been that way. … Every time I found my groove and felt like I was about to get going, something had to get in the way. Just very frustrating.”

Texas outfielder Joey Gallo will miss at least a month after the AllStar had surgery to remove the hamate bone from his right hand.

“Really disappointed but I’m actually not surprised after what I saw the last four games, especially the swing,” Texas manager Chris Woodward said. “I think it’s been bothering him for a little bit.”

Gallo is hitting .252 with 22 homers and 49 RBIs this season, but was mired in a 1for28 slump over his last seven games.

Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner went on the IL because of a sore knee. Briefly: The Brewers plan to recall infielder Travis Shaw from TripleA on Friday, the Athletic reported. Shaw, who hit 32 homers last season, was sent to the minors on June 28 after his batting average dipped to .164 . ... The Twins activated center fielder Byron Buxton, who had been on the sevenday concussion list.
