Cal alum An up by 1 at PGA Tour event

-

Byeong Hun An shot a 5underpar 65 on Friday in the Wyndham Championship to take a onestroke lead into the weekend in Greensboro, N.C.

The former Cal player was at 13under 127 halfway through the PGA Tour’s final event before the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Brice Garnett was a stroke back after a 64, and six players — including 2011 Wyndham winner Webb Simpson and firstround coleader Sungjae Im — were at 9under.

Adam Svensson also was in that group after shooting the best round of the day, 61.

An, who shared the firstround lead with Im at 8under, made his move up the leaderboard with three consecutive birdies late in his round.

Finishing on the back nine, the 27yearold South Korean who’s winless on tour had birdies on Nos. 35 and closed his second consecutive bogeyfree round with four consecutive pars.

“I came close last couple years and, you know, maybe this week might do it,” An said about that longawaited first victory. “But still have two more days and there are a lot of players behind me. … Just do what I’ve been doing the last couple days and just hit a lot of fairways and greens and make some putts. If someone plays better than me, then he deserves to win it.”

Women’s British Open: South African Ashleigh Buhai, who has never won on the LPGA Tour, stretched her lead in Milton Keynes, England, to three shots by shooting a bogeyfree 5under 67 in the second round.

Buhai, 30, birdied four of the final eight holes to improve to 12under 132.

“I’m trying not to keep thinking it’s a major. It’s just another tournament,” said Buhai, whose best previous British Open finish was a tie for 30th in 2017. “I just keep trying to do what I’ve done the last few weeks. I’ve kept the mistakes off the card the last two days.”

Alone in second at 9under was Hinako Shibuno (69), a 20yearold rookie on the Japan LPGA Tour who is making her LPGA Tour and major championship debut. Lizette Salas (67) was third at 8under.

Korn Ferry Tour: Scott Gutschewski carded a 9under 61 for a twoshot lead over Scott Harrington and Zac Blair among players who were able to complete 36 holes of the fogdelayed Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward.

Dozens of players will complete their second round Saturday morning.

Gutschewski’s bogeyfree round included an eagle on No. 3 and four birdies and Blair had five birdies in a bogeyfree 65. Harrington, who shot 66, had an eventful round that included nine birdies, three bogeys and a doublebogey.

San Francisco native Ian Gilligan, a 16yearold amateur, shot a 74 and at 4over will miss the 36hole cut.

Boys Junior PGA Championship: Jack Heath made a 40foot birdie putt from the fringe on the par4 18th hole for an 8under 62 and a onestroke victory at Hartford, Conn. The 17yearold from Charlotte, N.C., finished at 21under 259 at Keney Park Golf Course to break the tournament record of 266 set by Akshay Bhatia in 2017.
