Price placed on IL over cyst on wrist

-

Boston lefthander David Price was placed on the 10day injured list Thursday after an MRI exam revealed a cyst on his left wrist.

Price, who is 75 with a 4.36 ERA this season, received a cortisone shot in the wrist Wednesday.

“The hope is for him to come (back) sooner rather than later, but we don’t have a timetable,” manager Alex Cora said. “We’ll make sure he’s OK, and we’ll go from there.”

Cora noted that the cyst, classified as a TFCC cyst, was not cancerous or related to any other serious illness.

Price last pitched Sunday, against the Yankees, after being reinstated from paternity2 leave. He allowed seven runs and nine hits in 2 ⁄3 innings in New York, falling to 04 with a 10.59 ERA in his past four starts.

Cora said Price told him after the game that he “didn’t feel 100 percent” and “felt tight.”

“His last three or four (starts), as far as the location and the action of the pitches, it wasn’t there,” Cora said. “Regardless if he’s throwing 87 or 95 (mph), precision and strikes is his game.”

Price missed 14 games this season with left elbow tendinitis and was bothered by elbow inflammation during the 2017 season. Cruz hurting: Minnesota designated hitter Nelson Cruz strained his left wrist after a swing and a miss at a pitch from Cleveland starter Mike Clevinger and left the game between the teams Thursday.

Cruz grimaced immediately after the swing. After a brief evaluation of the affected area, he was taken out for C.J. Cron, who swung and missed at one pitch to complete a strikeout that was charged to Cruz.

The Twins said Cruz’s status is day to day. He missed 15 games this year because of a strained left wrist.

Cruz has hit 16 of his 32 home runs this season in the 26 games since the AllStar break.
