Exhibit of Latino art puts posters on display, on sale

- — Grace Li

“Off the Wall” is redefining art exhibit rules by staying true to its name — from Friday, Aug. 9, through Sept. 20, you’ll literally be able to take poster prints off the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts’ wall for purchase. Each print is conceived from political and social activism within and for the Latino community and points to the Bay Area’s extensive Latino printmaking history — one that the center believes is one of the most prolific and influential in the United States.

Works from “Off the Wall” draw from two printmaking studios — La Raza Graphics and Mission Gráfica — and many artists, including Juan Fuentes, Linda Lucero, and Calixto Robles. Individually, the prints are dramatic and striking pieces of protest, using vivid colors and illustrations to celebrate International Women’s Day, to challenge immigration raids and deportations, and call for unity against oppression. Collectively, they stand as a testament to a rich and complex history of protest, resistance and activism.

And “Off the Wall” isn’t just a chance to view these prints side by side, in conversation with one another. It’s also an opportunity to blur the line between art and viewer, to take one of the approximately 4,000 prints home.

“Off the Wall”: 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday. Through Sept. 20. Free. Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, 2868 Mission St., S.F. www.missionculturalcenter.org
