49ers sign well-traveled lineman
The 49ers have added another offensive tackle from Notre Dame, but with far less fanfare.
A year after selecting right tackle Mike McGlinchey with the No. 9 overall pick, the 49ers signed journeyman Sam Young on Monday.
Young, 32, has started 21 games in his four-team, nineyear career since he was a 2010 sixth-round pick of the Cowboys out of Notre Dame. Young was signed after Shon Coleman, the 49ers’ primary backup offensive tackle, sustained a broken fibula and dislocated ankle Saturday in the preseason opener against Dallas. The 49ers placed Coleman on season-ending injured reserve Monday.
Given the 49ers’ lack of proven depth at the position — sixth-round rookie Justin Skule was behind Coleman on the depth chart — Young is the favorite to open the season as the 49ers’ swing tackle.
