NEWS OF THE DAY
From Around the World
1 World War II remembrance:
The presidents of Germany and Poland observed the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II on Sunday with ceremonies filled with the spirit of reconciliation and Germany’s humility in the face of suffering it inflicted during the war. Polish President Andrzej Duda was joined in Warsaw by the representatives of dozens of other countries, including U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and the two top leaders of Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel and President FrankWalter Steinmeier. Nazi Germany attacked Poland on Sept. 1, 1939, starting a nearly sixyear war that killed more than 70 million people.
2 Disputed tanker:
An Iranian oil tanker pursued by the U.S. across the Mediterranean Sea slowed to a near stop Sunday off the coast of Syria, where U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo alleges it will be unloaded despite denials from Tehran. The saga of the Adrian Darya 1, formerly known as the Grace 1, comes as tensions remain high between the U.S. and Iran over its unraveling nuclear deal with world powers. The shiptracking website MarineTraffic.com showed the Adrian Darya slowed to a nearstop on Sunday about 50 nautical miles off Syria. The U.S., which has sought to impound the vessel, warned countries not to accept the Adrian Darya. The ship is carrying 2.1 million barrels of crude oil worth about $130 million.
3 Plane crash:
All nine people aboard a medical evacuation plane were killed Sunday when the aircraft crashed into a resort area south of the Philippine capital of Manila and exploded in flames, officials said. The plane crashed into a resort compound in Pansol village in Laguna province. Two people on the ground were injured. The Civil Aviation Authority said the plane disappeared from radar for unknown reasons as it flew over Laguna, about 40 miles south of the capital. The plane was supposed to land in Manila. The nine on board were two pilots, two nurses, a doctor, a patient, the patient’s wife and two other people, police said.
4 Hairy babies:
Parents in Spain whose babies and toddlers developed abnormal body hair plan to sue a company that put a hair loss treatment into containers meant for a medicine. Health authorities have blamed the packaging mixup involving the topical treatment Minoxidil and omeprazole syrup, which is used for stomach problems, on FarmaQuimica Sur. At least 20 children, ranging from newborns to 2yearolds, have been affected, Spain’s Health Ministry has said. Although some of the babies are already losing the excess hair and experts have said all of it should fall out eventually, some families also were warned of possible longterm side effects.
5 Climate plea:
Pope Francis urged Sunday governments to show the “political will” to take drastic steps to deal with climate change and said it’s time to abandon dependence on fossil fuels. Francis issued the appeal at the start of several weeks of prayer by Christians to raise political awareness about pollution and exploitation of natural resources. He also wants people to reflect on “thoughtful and harmful” daily decisions about consumption and “selfcentered” attitudes toward creation. Francis said that at the U.N Climate Action Summit this month “governments will have the responsibility of showing the political will to take drastic measures” to achieve as quickly as possible zero net greenhouse gas emissions and to limit the average increase in global temperature in line with the Paris climate accords.
