Minnesota’s Gibson has colitis
Minnesota righthander Kyle Gibson, who is second on the AL Central leaders in wins (13) and innings pitched (1491⁄3), was placed on the injured list Sunday because of ulcerative colitis.
Gibson told MLB.com that he has lost 10 pounds over the past 6½ weeks and has been having trouble sleeping. There is no timetable for his return.
“I still feel I can contribute a lot here down the stretch,” Gibson said. “But I’m not going to be able to do that if I’m not sleeping and I’m only getting consistently five to six hours of sleep. That’s kind of where we are.” Close call: Dodgers rookie pitcher Dustin May appeared to avoid serious injury Sunday despite getting hit on the right side of the head by a line drive off the bat of Arizona first baseman Jake Lamb.
“It hit off the band part of my hat,” May said. “So I mean, it was probably the best possible outcome for it. It was pretty scary.” Injury report: Cincinnati third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who hit his 40th homer in the first game of a doubleheader with the Cardinals, left the nightcap after Daniel Ponce de Leon plunked him on his left hand with a pitch . ...
