Cal’s Montaño to get medals from 2011, ’13

-

Cal alum Alysia Montaño will receive bronze medals she was cheated out of by a Russian who finished ahead of her at the 2011 and 2013 world championships but was later disqualified for doping.

Montaño said on social media that she had been invited to world championships in Doha, Qatar, where she’ll get medals for the 800meter races in a ceremony Sept. 30.

She finished fourth both years but was moved up when Russian Mariya Savinova was disqualified for doping.

On Instagram, Montaño thanked Russian whistleblower Yulia Stepanova for exposing the Russian doping and said “athletes who were doping stole precious moments and money from clean athletes including me, who never got the outdoor podium moment that I earned.” College basketball: Virginia men’s head coach Tony Bennett declined a pay raise from the school and instead asked school officials for additional compensation for his staff and program improvement.

University officials said in a news release that Bennett did sign a oneyear contract extension, but instead of a pay hike, the coach asked athletic director Carla Williams to focus on his staff and the program. The release also stated that Bennett and his wife also made a $500,000 contribution toward a careerdevelopment program for current and explayers. College football: Fenway Park will host a matchup between teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the American Athletic Conference, starting in 2020. It will be the first college bowl game at the centuryold home of the Boston Red Sox.

Oregon tight end Cam McCormick will miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury. WNBA: Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier is Rookie of the Year. She’s the fourth WNBA player with at least 400 points, 200 rebounds, 75 assists, 50 steals, 25 blocks and 25 threepointers in a season. Golf: Justin Thomas committed to play in next week’s Safeway Open in Napa. Thomas, formerly No. 1 in the world ranking, now is No. 5. He will join Phil Mickelson, Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau for the PGA Tour event at Silverado Resort. Soccer: Cal alum Alex Morgan will miss the rest of the season for the NWSL’s Orlando Pride with a patella stress reaction in her right knee.
