Monday’s Browns-49ers game review

- — Eric Branch

OFFENSE

Who needs Joe Staley? Even with rookie sixthround pick Justin Skule replacing their Pro Bowl left tackle, the 49ers rushed for 275 yards, averaged 6.9 yards a carry and had scoring runs of 83 yards by Matt Breida on their first offensive play and 19 yards by Tevin Coleman. The ground domination allowed QB Jimmy Garoppolo to flourish in a caretaker role (181 yards, 2 TDs, 108.5 passer rating). Kyle Shanahan wasn’t thrilled with a ragged ending that included three offensive penalties and just three points in the fourth quarter (picky, picky).

DEFENSE

Goodness. Gracious. That defensive line was scary. Just ask poor QB Baker Mayfield, who was dropped for four sacks, took eight hits, threw two picks, lost a fumble, had a 13.8 rating and was taunted with a flag-planting celebration by Nick Bosa, his chief tormentor. The only question after this: Why wasn’t Bosa, the No. 2 pick, the first selection in the NFL draft? Just kidding. Kind of.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Robbie Gould missed field goals of 47, 52 yards and had a 32-yarder blocked, although new long snapper Garrison Sanborn had something to do with his nightmare night. Punt returner Richie James failed to field a catchable a 63-yard boot. kick and The it good resulted news: in James had a 32-yard return, punter Mitch Wishnowsky had a 45.5 net average on five kicks and Marcell Harris forced Odell Beckham Jr. to fumble on a punt return and Raheem Mostert fell on the loose ball.

COACHING

Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said Shanahan’s run game would test their defense’s “eye discipline” and they failed the test: Breida and Coleman weren’t even touched on their TD runs. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh knew he could get pressure on Mayfield with just four rushers, but one blitz was a beauty: Saleh sent linebacker Kwon Alexander and cornerback K’Waun Williams, who combined on a sack.

OVERALL

The 49ers made the heavily hyped Browns look like, well, the Browns, the longtime laughingstock whose fans call their stadium “The Factory of Sadness.” As Beckham acknowledged, the 49ers beat them in “all phases.” Now if the 49ers, on a short week, can beat the well-rested Rams on Sunday in Los Angeles … Where is the Super Bowl this season? Just kidding. Kind of.
