Sibling revelry at Chase Center

Reinvigorated Jonas Brothers give fans a thrill with mix of old favorites, recent hits

- By Erika Carlos

Out on their “Happiness Begins” tour, the Jonas Brothers delivered even before they sang their first note at Chase Center on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Fans were dancing and singing, belting out mid2000s throwback songs all in anticipation for the night’s show. Sure, those hits are more than 10 years old now, but for many in the crowd “Jonasmania” never really fizzled out. Once the first note of “Rollercoaster” broke through the screams of the arena, it was like traveling back in time to when Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas dominated the Disney Channel with their boyish good looks.

Some things never change. The brothers — who wore striking monochrome outfits: Nick in orange, Joe in blue, and Kevin in green — looked as spry as ever, and a new generation of loyal followers looked as young and crazed as those before them. The JoBro fandom was strong in the new San Francisco arena, exuding pentup excitement for the group’s longawaited reunion after their tumultuous breakup in 2013, which stemmed from creative differences, a strained relationship and a desire

to pursue individual projects.

The Jonas Brothers’ comeback album, “Happiness Begins,” dropped in June and with it, the group’s biggest hit single to date, “Sucker,” which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 100 over the summer. Six years removed from the fallout, after successful solo careers and marriages, the Jonas Brothers were back and their Bay Area fans were ready.

The concert began with a video montage of young boys reenacting the interactions of three siblings — a motif that ran throughout the night — before the reallife Jonases emerged onto the stage.

Then in a spectacular display of sparks, smoke and all kinds of strobe lights, the trio performed “Rollercoaster,” which carried nostalgia for the band’s past while setting the stage for their comeback. It was followed by the band’s 2007 hit, “S.O.S.,” sparking a deafening roar reminiscent of the band’s earlier astronomical success.

Throughout the evening, past and present were embraced as the Jonas Brothers played a set list filled with their current charttopping album and older fan favorites. They also played songs from their individual careers: Nick performed “Jealous” from his 2014 solo album, which was followed by a showstopping performance of “Cake by the Ocean” from Joe’s time with the popfunk band DNCE. Kevin, the only sibling without any releases outside of the Jonas Brothers, got his own piano solo at the start of “Comeback.”

“You’ve made our dreams come true many times,” Nick said during a brief concert break.

Joined by Joe and Kevin, he announced that the band had recently received a platinum record for their “Happiness Begins” album. Before their encore of 2008’s “Burnin’ Up” and the night’s closer, “Sucker,” the brothers poured themselves shots of Tequila to toast the “greatest fans in the entire world,” Nick said.
