USA Swimming not liable in Stockton sexual abuse case

A jury in Stockton ruled that USA Swimming was not negligent in the case of a former coach who sexually abused a 13yearold swimmer, although she will receive $1.13 million from two USA Swimming affiliates in a civil lawsuit.

In the criminal case, former Stockton Swim Club coach Shunichi Fujishima pleaded guilty to sexually abusing the girl he had coached and was sentenced to 12 years in prison in October.

At that time, an outofcourt settlement with Stockton Swim Club and Pacific Swimming, which oversees the sport in the Stockton area, was reached in the civil case. The victim’s attorney, Robert Allard, announced the settlement amount Friday, when both he and USA Swimming confirmed that the jury found the sport’s national governing body not responsibl­e in the case.

Baseball: The Pittsburgh Pirates reportedly have agreed to hire Ben Cherington as their general manager. Cherington, 45, will replace Neal Huntington, who was hired in September 2007 and fired in October.

Cherington took over from Theo Epstein as GM of the Boston Red Sox in October 2011. He helped the Red Sox win the 2013 Series but left in August 2015 when Boston hired Dave Dombrowski as president of baseball operations. Cherington has been Toronto’s vice president of baseball operations under GM Ross Atkins since September 2016.

Twins prospect Brent Rooker hit a goahead, tworun homer in the seventh inning, and the United States beat Taiwan 32 in Tokyo to keep alive the Americans’ chance of earning an Olympic baseball berth at the Premier12 tournament. Zander Lombard shot a 7underpar 65 to overtake fellow South African Louis Oosthuizen and take a twoshot lead at 11 under after two rounds at the European Tour’s Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City, South Africa.

Tennis: Defending champion Alexander Zverev secured the last semifinal spot at the ATP Finals in London, eliminatin­g Rafael Nadal in the process. Zverev beat already eliminated Daniil Medvedev 64, 76 (4).
