Cal goes on 170 run, stays unbeaten

Grant Anticevich scored 16 of his careerhigh 23 points in the first half, and Cal went on a big run in the second half and beat visiting California Baptist 8262 on Friday night to remain unbeaten in coach Mark Fox’s debut season.

Matt Bradley added 16 points and Kareem South scored 10 to help the Bears (30) to their best start since 201516.

Cal blew an early 12point lead and trailed 4240 early in the second half but began to pull away shortly thereafter. Anticevich, whose previous high was 11 points, sparked a 170 run with a 3pointer and 16foot jumper.

Anticevich, who had nine rebounds, shot 9 of 11 and made all five 3point attempts to match the Cal record shared by Amit Tamir and Eric Vierneisel. Anticevich had made multiple 3pointers in a game only once in his previous two seasons in Berkeley.

Ferron Flavors Jr. had 11 points and seven rebounds for California Baptist (22). #2 Duke 74, Georgia State 63: Tre Jones scored a careerhigh 31 points and Duke pulled away to beat visiting Georgia State. Freshman Vernon Carey Jr. added season highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds and Jack White finished with 10 rebounds. #5 Kansas 112, Monmouth 57: Isaiah Moss scored 21 points as host Kansas routed undersized and outclassed Monmouth.

Moss, who missed the opener against Duke because of an injury, was 5 of 6 from beyond the arc as the Jayhawks (21) ran their home winning streak to 23. #6 North Carolina 77, GardnerWeb­b 61: Freshman star Cole Anthony had 28 points to help North Carolina triumph at home. #8 Gonzaga 79, Texas A&M 49: Admon Gilder and Ryan Woolridge each scored 16 points, and No. 8 Gonzaga won in College Station, Texas. Filip Petrusev added 14 points and 10 rebounds, helping the Bulldogs (40) overcome a slow start. #17 Utah State 81, North Carolina A&T 54: Alphonso Anderson had 21 points, six rebounds and three assists and Justin Bean added 18 points, 10 rebounds and three assists to help Utah State win at home. #21 Xavier 59, Missouri State 56: Paul Scruggs scored 14 points and made a layup with 11.6 seconds left. The Musketeers (40) never trailed at home but couldn’t shake clear of the team picked to win the Missouri Valley Conference. #22 Auburn 116, Cal State Northridge 70: Samir Doughty and Auburn started clobbering Cal State Northridge much closer to the first shot than the last one. Doughty scored a careerhigh 33 points, J’Von McCormick had a schoolreco­rd 16 assists and the Tigers jumped up big early on their way to the home rout. #24 Baylor 72, Texas State 63: Baylor coach Scott Drew expected a tough game against an experience­d opponent that won 24 games last season. The Bears played without preseason AllBig 12 forward Tristan Clark.

Jared Butler scored 15 points, Freddie Gillespie had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and three other players scored in double figures for Baylor. Utah 73, Minnesota 69: Timmy Allen scored 19 points and collected 10 rebounds and Both Gach added 19 points to help Utah win at home.

Riley Battin added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Rylan Jones chipped in 10 points and six assists for the Utes.

WOMEN

#10 Mississipp­i State 124, Murray State 43: Jessika Carter had career highs with 25 points and 18 rebounds and Mississipp­i State at home set a school record for points in a game. Carter was 8 of 16 from the field and 9 of 10 at the freethrow line. Half of her rebounds came on the offensive end and she had two assists.
