No. 3 Salesian tumbles in tournament quarters

If you’re going to compete among the state’s elite, you have to bring it every night. Even if it’s late in the afternoon.

Coming off a wild overtime victory the night before, SalesianRi­chmond’s boys basketball team just didn’t bring it’s “A game,” according to head coach Bill Mellis, in a 6853 quarterfin­al loss to Etiwanda on Friday in the Platinum Division of The Classic at DamienLa Verne (Los Angeles County).

Shane Bell had 13 points and Dante Sawyer 10 for the The Chronicle’s thirdranke­d team (63), who had a tough time keeping Jahmai Mashack (24 points, 13 rebounds) off the boards. Senior guard Camren Pierce added 15 points for Etiwanda (111), which advanced to the semifinals.

The Pride were coming off a 7170 overtime win over St. BernardPla­ya del Rey, which entered Thursday’s game 110. Te’Jon Sawyer had 21 points in that victory, Tyler Brinkman 12 and Jaden Lazo and Austin Johnson, with 10 points apiece.

“We just didn’t put out enough energy today for whatever reason,” Mellis said. “We got killed on the boards. They turned us over too much. We needed a lot more out of our bench and just didn’t get it.”

#1 Dublin 91, Damien MemorialHo­nolulu 65:

Also in Platinum play at the Damien tournament, Anthony Roy had 27 points, Elijah Alonso 20 and Malik Jackson 11 as the Gaels (9-1) took control with a 26-13 run in the fourth quarter. Dublin was coming off a 73-65 opening-round loss to Rancho Christian-Temecula (11-2), the state’s No. 19 team, according to MaxPreps.com. In that loss, Roy had 23 points and Jackson and Jaden Saunders had 10 apiece. The Gaels had a tough time stopping the nation’s No. 1 senior recruit, 6-foot-11 Evan Mobley, who has signed with USC. He had 24 points. Dublin faces Fairfax-Los Angeles (11-2) on Saturday in consolatio­n play.

Modesto Christian tournament:

Aidan Mahaney had 22 points, Logan Robeson added 16 and Emmanuel Callas 11 as eighth-ranked Campolindo-Moraga (7-3) defeated Brookside Christian-Stockton 65-48 to move into the semifinals Saturday. Campolindo opened the tournament with a 76-29 romp over Beyer-Modesto behind 12 points apiece from Robeson and Callas. … James LoganUnion City (4-3) fell to Modesto Christian 74-48 in the quarterfin­al despite 23 points from Brah’Jon Thompson. Baljot Sahi and Oziyah Sellers combined for nine 3-pointers and 27 points for Modesto Christian. James Logan opened the tournament Thursday with a 73-43 win over Ripon as Thompson scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter.

Leo LaRocca Sand Dune Classic:

Host St. Ignatius (5-4) rolled into the final of its tournament with a 73-42 win over Carlmont-Belmont. The Wildcats opened the tournament Thursday with a 70-34 win over Bella Vista-Fair Oaks as King Wilhite had 15 points, Ethan Jew and Malcolm McCray-Hill added 12 points apiece and Daniel Webster 10 . ... St. Ignatius will play LoyolaLos Angeles (13-3), a 56-50 semifinal winner over Monte Vista-Danville, in Saturday’s final. Jason Lai had 22 points for Monte Vista.

Bambauer Classic:

At Marin Catholic-Kentfield, No. 12 Serra (6-2) moved into the semifinals with a 60-35 win over Heritage-Brentwood. The Padres will face Central Catholic-Modesto, a 57-55 winner over Redwood-Larkspur. The other semifinal will pit University (7-4), a 56-48 winner over Rocklin, against Marin Catholic or Mission Prep-San Luis Obispo.

Girls basketball West Coast Jamboree:

Olivia Williams had 22 points and Sydney Bourland contribute­d 19 as topranked Mitty made an impressive debut at the 20th annual tournament with a 75-28 Platinum Division win over Clovis North (11-3) at College Park-Pleasant Hill. Katie Springs added 10 points for Mitty (7-2). Clovis North’s resume includes a 55-54 win over perennial state power St. Mary’s-Stockton and a 63-60 loss to state No. 13 Windward-Los Angeles. In other Platinum Divsion first-round play, national No. 5 Mater Dei-Santa Ana defeated Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland, The Chronicle’s No. 2 team, 69-30. Mitty and Mater Dei meet in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at College Park. The other semifinal game will pit fourth-ranked St. Joseph Notre Dame-Alameda (6-0), a 60-54 overtime winner over Spanish Springs (Nev.), against national No. 5 Sierra Canyon or Cardinal NewmanSant­a Rosa.
