Kapler raves about Beede’s bullpen session.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Manager Gabe Kapler is not just curious about what’s inside his new players’ heads, but also what’s in their mouths.
Kapler said he noticed that Johnny Cueto chewed gum during his first bullpen session Wednesday and sunflower seeds when he threw Sunday. Kapler asked Cueto why, and the pitcher responded that chewing something relaxes him.
Over the first week of camp, Kapler seems hyperfocused on pitchers’ bullpens, more than fundamental drills or catchers’ batting practice. He has much to learn about a lot of pitchers he does not know.
He complimented Tyler Beede’s work Sunday, calling the session “outstanding.”
“We met with Tyler this morning, and one of Tyler’s initiatives is to stay with his offspeed pitches even if he doesn’t have an earlystage feel for them,” Kapler said. “So if he throws a changeup that doesn’t land for a strike, you’re not going to go away from it. He’s going to keep going back to it. Same thing with his curveball.
“He brought that intensity to the ’pen, and both of those pitches were landing the strike zone over and over and over. I want to say like 15 out of 20 strikes with his offspeed, which is a really good ratio for a bullpen, and even his misses were competitive.”
Kapler called Cueto’s ’pen “explosive.” He meant the way the ball was coming out of Cueto’s hand, not the way sunflower seeds were shooting through his lips.
Briefly: Kapler plans to address the full squad before its first workout Monday and expects others to talk, too, saying it won’t be a “oneman show.” … Fans can begin watching practices Monday morning. The park was offlimits over the first week because of continuing construction. … The coaches are working with Joey Bart to catch pitches in a way that lets the pitcher see the ball rather than the top of his glove. The idea is to keep his hand quieter and aid framing.
