‘Hamilton’ won’t be back in S.F.

- By Lily Janiak

The remainder of the current San Francisco run of “Hamilton” is canceled, producer BroadwaySF announced Tuesday, March 31, in response to a revised coronavirus shelterinplace order that has shut down live events in the city through at least May 3.

The musical had been scheduled to play the Orpheum Theatre through May 31, when the city’s previous ban on large gatherings was extended only through April 30.

Ticket holders for the canceled performances who purchased through BroadwaySF will be automatically refunded via their means of purchase. Ticket holders who purchased via a third party such as Goldstar or Today Tix should consult with those vendors.

The move comes the same day that seven Bay Area counties, including San Francisco, extended shelterinplace orders and announced more restrictive policies that close playgrounds, dog parks and other public spaces, all aimed at preventing the spread of COVID19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus.

The San Francisco cast of the blockbuster show, who nicknamed themselves the “And Peggy” tour, after a line in the musical, gave their last performance as a matinee on March 11, the day San Francisco Mayor London Breed banned gatherings of 1,000 people or more. The Orpheum Theatre seats 2,203.

The show began previews on Feb. 12, 2019, and played for 473 performances. A previous run, with mostly different cast members, lasted almost five months in 2017; its arrival was enough to buoy multiple MidMarket restaurants.

More than 960,000 people have seen the show in San Francisco, including 20,000 students, according to BroadwaySF.

LinManuel Miranda’s musical about the nation’s first secretary of the Treasury won 11 Tony Awards in 2o16. In 2018, it became the first show in Broadway history to gross more than $4 million in one week.

On Broadway and in Toronto, performances have been suspended through at least April 12. “Hamilton” has been postponed through April 19 at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre; tickets are on sale through Nov. 22.

A run in Atlanta originally scheduled for March 31May 3 is now scheduled to begin Aug. 4. A spring run planned for Ottawa has been rescheduled to begin performances Nov. 24.

Although this San Francisco run of “Hamilton” has been canceled, BroadwaySF has frequently remounted successful productions of other shows, notably “The Book of Mormon.” It had planned to produce that show a fifth time, with performances beginning Tuesday, March 31, but that run has also been canceled.
