Michigan flooding: Another round of evacuations took place Friday in central Michigan downriver from two dams that were overwhelmed earlier this week by floodwaters. More than a dozen people in Spaulding Township left their homes though some refused to go, Fire Chief Tom Fortier said. Flooding was occurring along the Tittabawassee and Shiawassee rivers that flow into the Saginaw River. Spaulding Township is about 100 miles north of Detroit near the Edenville and Sanford dams that were overwhelmed Tuesday after heavy rains. The flooding forced about 11,000 people in the Midland area to evacuate.

Shooting attack: A 20yearold construction worker who opened fire at a suburban Phoenix restaurant and retail complex, injuring three people, wanted to target people in his own age group in retaliation for being bullied, authorities said. The shooting rampage occurred Wednesday night at the Westgate Entertainment District in Glendale. Suspect Armando Hernandez later surrendered, telling detectives that he intended to harm 10 people, though it’s unclear why he chose that number. “He wanted to gain some respect, and he felt that he had been bullied in his life,” police Sgt. Randy Stewart said. Police say Hernandez filmed the attack, holding a cell phone with one hand and blasting away with the rifle in the other. One victim remains in critical condition.

Police shooting: A man suspected of shooting an offduty police officer in Tennessee was later killed in a gunbattle with officers, Nashville police said. The unidentified man shot Officer Darrell Osment while he was walking his dog in plain clothes Thursday night, according to police. Osment was hospitalized in stable condition. The man fled in a vehicle, which officers halted with a spike strip. They then heard gunfire and three returned fire, killing the man.

Earthquake: Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak has declared a state of emergency after the state’s biggest earthquake in 65 years caused significant damage last week to three highways, including the main route connecting Reno to Las Vegas. Sisolak said his declaration late Thursday will make the state eligible for funding from the Federal Highway Administration to help cover repair costs expected to exceed $700,000. No one was killed or seriously injured in the 6.5 magnitude quake about 35 miles west of Tonopah on May 15. But Sisolak said the earthquake caused extensive damage to Highway 95, U.S. Route 6 and U.S. Route 360, disrupting travel in Esmeralda, Mineral and Nye counties. It was felt as far away as Salt Lake City.

Dive boat disaster: Coroner’s reports for the 34 victims who died in a scuba boat fire off the Southern California coast last year show they died of carbon monoxide poisoning before they were burned. All 33 scuba divers and one crew member died in the Sept. 2 fire off Santa Cruz Island. The only survivors were the captain and four other crew members, who were asleep above deck. The coroner’s reports list smoke inhalation as the cause of death for the 34 victims, all of whom were in the belowdeck bunk room when the fire broke out.
