NEWS OF THE DAY
From Across the Nation
_1 Party attack: Nine people were shot at a party Saturday night in Syracuse, N.Y., authorities said. One was a 17yearold boy in critical condition with a wound to the head and eight others — ranging in age from 18 to 53 — were expected to survive, a release from Syracuse police said. No one was immediately taken into custody. Officers had arrived at the scene just before 9 p.m. on a report of a stolen car, but they were met by people who said shots had been fired into the crowd of a “few hundred,” police Chief Kenton Buckner said. The event was a birthday party near downtown Syracuse.
_2 Texas shooting: At least five people were wounded in a shooting early Sunday in Texas’ capital of Austin, officials said. Five adults with “serious, potentially lifethreatening injuries” were taken to local hospitals by AustinTravis County EMS, the organization said in a tweet. The shooting took place around 3 a.m. in a commercial area of downtown Austin, according to tweets from EMS and Austin police. No arrests were reported.
_3 Effigy hanged: Motorists saw a startling scene Saturday as they drove along a Florida interstate: a mannequin dressed in a police uniform dangling from a rope at an overpass. Emergency crews in Jacksonville were dispatched and discovered the mannequin hanging from an Interstate 95 overpass wearing a pig mask and dressed in what appeared to be a New York City police uniform. In a statement, Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams called the incident “extremely disturbing.” He said it was an attempt to stoke “antipolice sentiment and drive a divide in our community.” An investigation is under way. The death of George Floyd in Minnesota has spawned protests across the country and focused attention on police brutality against Blacks.
_4 Minneapolis shooting: A shooting in a popular nightlife area early Sunday left one man dead and 11 people wounded in a chaotic scene that sent people ducking into restaurants and other businesses for cover. The shooting broke out shortly after midnight in the city’s trendy Uptown neighborhood. Police said they believe there was more than one shooter, described only as “individuals on foot.” No one was in custody, and police have not said what may have prompted the shooting. All of the injured were adults. In video posted to social media that showed the immediate aftermath, screams could be heard as small crowds of people gathered, with some crouched over people lying on the pavement before police officers on bicycles showed up. _5 Cobain guitar: The guitar Kurt Cobain played on Nirvana’s 1993 “MTV Unplugged” performance months before his death sold at auction Saturday for an eyepopping $6 million. The 1959 Martin D18E that Cobain played in the band’s rare acoustic performance and subsequent live album was sold to Australian Peter Freedman, owner of Rde Microphones, at the sale run by Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills. Cobain used it to play at the Nov. 18, 1993, show in New York that came less than five months before the singer and songwriter died at age 27.
