Bumgarner cruises, then rocked in loss

Eric Hosmer hit threerun doubles in consecutiv­e innings to ruin former Giants star Madison Bumgarner’s Arizona debut and give the host San Diego Padres a 72 victory over the Arizona Diamondbac­ks on Friday.

The six RBIs tied Hosmer’s career high and backed Chris Paddack, who threw six scoreless innings.

Bumgarner allowed two hits before struggling in the sixth. He allowed three runs and four hits in 52⁄3 innings, with four strikeouts and three walks.

Astros 8, Mariners 2: Dusty Baker posted a win in his debut as host Houston’s manager as Michael Brantley hit a three-run homer to back Justin Verlander.

Twins 10, White Sox 5: Max Kepler homered against Lucas Giolito in his first two at-bats and visiting Minnesota beat Chicago.

Indians 2, Royals 0: Shane Bieber struck out 14 over six scoreless innings as Cleveland made a statement for minorities by wearing its road jerseys with “Cleveland” on the front, instead of “Indians.” Bieber’s 14 strikeouts set a club record for Opening Day and are the most in the majors in an opener since Hall of Famer Randy Johnson also fanned 14 on March 31, 1996.

Mets 1, Braves 0: Yoenis Cespedes launched a home run that sent Jacob deGrom and host New York past Atlanta. It was the oftinjured Cespedes’ first major-league game since July 20, 2018. Coming off consecutiv­e Cy Young Awards, deGrom fanned eight and extended his scoreless streak to a career-best 28 innings, the longest active streak in the majors.

Cubs 3, Brewers 0: Kyle Hendricks pitched three-hitter and Anthony Rizzo and Ian Happ homered for host Chicago to give David Ross his first victory in his debut as a big-league manager.

Red Sox 13, Orioles 2: J.D. Martinez and ex-Giant Kevin Pillar each drove in three runs, and host Boston rolled past Baltimore.

Cardinals 5, Pirates 4: Jack Flaherty pitched seven solid innings and Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer for host St. Louis.

Reds 7, Tigers 1: Newcomer Mike Moustakas drove in four runs, including a two-run homer, and former A’s starter Sonny Gray fanned nine and gave up three hits in six innings, extending his major-league record to 34 consecutiv­e starts without allowing more than six hits.

Rangers 1, Rockies 0: Lance Lynn struck out nine in six innings and Texas inaugurate­d its new retractabl­e-roof stadium with a win over Colorado.

Marlins 5, Phillies 2: Jesus Aguilar hit a two-run homer off Aaron Nola, Sandy Alcantara pitched into the seventh and visiting Miami spoiled manager Joe Girardi’s first game in Philadelph­ia.

Blue Jays 6, Rays 4: Cavan Biggio, son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, hit a three-run homer and visiting Toronto began its still-inprogress odyssey by topping the Tampa Bay.
