_1 D.A.’s husband charged: The husband of Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey has been charged with pointing a gun at Black Lives Matter members who demonstrated outside the couple’s home the day before she faced a primary election in March. The attorney general filed three misdemeanor charges Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court against David Lacey, 66, for assault with a firearm for the March 2 incident. Jackie Lacey offered an emotional apology at the time. Lacey’s campaign issued a statement Tuesday saying her husband thought they were in danger and was trying to protect them.

_2 Census count: The U.S. Census Bureau is cutting its schedule for data collection for the 2020 census a month short as legislation that would have extended the national head count’s deadlines stalls in Congress. The move is worrying researchers, politicians and others who say the change will miss hardtocount communities, including minorities and immigrants, and produce less trustworthy data. The Census Bureau said late Monday that the doorknocking and ability for households to respond either online, by phone or by mail to the questionnaire will stop at the end of September instead of the end of October so that it can meet an endoftheyear deadline to turn in numbers used for redrawing congressional districts.

_3 Human trafficking: The Trump administration on Tuesday announced more than $35 million in Justice Department grants to organizations that provide safe housing for victims of human trafficking. Attorney General William Barr and presidential adviser Ivanka Trump announced the awards at an event attended by human trafficking victims and organizations that serve them. Barr thanked President Trump and his daughter Ivanka for working to end what he called an “evil scourge.”

_4 Trump flipflop: In an abrupt reversal, President Trump now is encouraging voters in the critical swing state of Florida to vote by mail after months of criticizing the practice, and only days after threatening to sue Nevada over a new votebymail law. His encouragement follows a surge in Democratic requests to vote by mail in Florida. “Whether you call it Vote by Mail or Absentee Voting, in Florida the election system is Safe and Secure, Tried and True. Florida’s Voting system has been cleaned up (we defeated Democrats attempts at change), so in Florida I encourage all to request a Ballot & Vote by Mail!,” Trump tweeted Tuesday. White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany rejected the notion that the president has changed his views.

_5 SEALs on Kaepernick: The commander of the Navy SEALs said the unit will suspend its support of the National Navy SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, Fla., a nonprofit organization not overseen by the military after videos surfaced of dogs attacking a man wearing a Colin Kaepernick jersey during a demonstration. “Each and every one of us serves to protect our fellow Americans — ALL Americans. Even the perception that our commitment to serving the men and women of this nation is applied unevenly is destructive,” Rear Adm. Collin Green said in an email to his forces Monday.
