Best record in MLB? Marlins share mark

-

Jon Berti hit an RBI double off Asher Wojciechowski in the first inning and then scored on a flyball by Jesus Aguilar as the Miami Marlins completed a doubleheader sweep in Baltimore with a 21 win over the Orioles on Wednesday.

So, guess who’s tied with the Cubs and the Twins for the best winning percentage in the majors? The Marlins. It’s impressive stuff, but it hasn’t been easy.

“I feel like we’ve been playing for half a season,” manager Don Mattingly said. “It has been a rough trip as far as what has happened to us. And it has just been a different year in the world and with what is going on in sports.”

Brian Anderson homered in the opener, and Miami won 10 despite getting only two hits.

Both games were seven innings apiece, with the Orioles the home team in the opener and the Marlins serving as hosts in the nightcap.

The Marlins (51) have won three in a row since emerging from a coronavirusprompted layoff that left them with a roster filled with callups, free agents and rookies. Miami has allowed a total of one run and 10 hits in those three games at Camden Yards. Realmuto homered to back Zack Wheeler as the Phillies snapped the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak. Due to a late schedule change, the Yankees were the “home” team for Game 1. Blue Jays 2, Braves 1: Hyun-Jin Ryu combined with four relievers on a two-hitter for visiting Toronto. Ryu gave up only one hit, an infield single by Adam Duvall in the second, in five innings. Cubs 6, Royals 1: Yu Darvish and two relievers combined on a five-hitter as visiting Chicago won its sixth in a row.
