UConn is 1st major school to cancel football over virus

-

UConn canceled its 20202021 football season Wednesday, becoming the first FBS program to do so because of the coronavirus pandemic. Other schools had taken the Huskies off their schedules and the governor was reluctant to allow UConn to travel to states with high infection rates.

“The safety challenges created by COVID19 place our football studentathletes at an unacceptable level of risk,” athletic director David Benedict said.

UConn had been scheduled to play its first season as an independent after leaving the American Athletic Conference.

Among its canceled games was a matchup against San Jose State. The Spartans and the rest of the Mountain West announced plans for football teams to play an eightgame conference schedule starting Sept. 26, and up to two nonconference games.

The Big Ten released its 10game conferenceonly football schedule beginning as early as Labor Day weekend.
