Coleman, a cancer survivor, opts out

- By Eric Branch

Offensive tackle Shon Coleman hasn’t played a snap for the 49ers since he was acquired in a trade before the 2018 season.

And he won’t appear in a game in 2020, either.

Coleman, 28, a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with leukemia at 18, opted out of the season Thursday because of concerns about the coronavirus. Coleman presumably will be classified as a highrisk optout, meaning he will receive $350,000 this season. His oneyear, $825,000 deal will carry over to 2021.

Jake Brendel, a 27yearold center signed in February and thought to be a roster long shot, also opted out. A 2016 undrafted free agent, Brendel played 21 games (three starts) with the Dolphins from 2016 through ’18.

More than 60 NFL players had opted out before Thursday’s deadline to do so. Coleman and Brendel joined wide receiver Travis Benjamin as the only 49ers sitting out the season.

Coleman, a 2016 thirdround pick of the Browns, was expected to compete for the swing tackle spot this summer with a group that includes Justin Skule and Colton McKivitz, a rookie fifthround pick. Another candidate could be Daniel Brunskill, who is competing with Tom Compton for the starting spot at right guard.

Coleman missed last season with a broken ankle he suffered in the preseason opener. He was inactive for all 16 games in 2018.

Just kidding: In praising Javon Kinlaw’s work ethic and football smarts, defensive end Nick Bosa described the rookie defensive tackle as a “really good kid.”

Kinlaw, 22, is 20 days older than Bosa, the youngest player on the 49ers in 2019.
