Warriors forward Draymond Green took to social media early Thursday morning to voice support for teams that sat out NBA playoff games Wednesday in response to the police shooting of a Black man in Kenosha, Wis.

But in lauding the players who made that stand, Green, 30, also stressed the importance of teams continuing to build upon the league’s platform.

Hours before NBA players decided to resume the playoffs, Green responded to an Instagram comment suggesting that sports can wait during this time of widespread social unrest.

“But why can sports wait?” Green wrote. “The notion that athletes should stop working, but no one else in the world should stop is baffling to me. Why stop doing the very thing that offers you the biggest platform to speak for those that look like me/a lot of us.”

Green went on to say on Twitter, “Making headlines is great. The attention has been grabbed. Now the next steps are more important now than ever. But it’s not just athletes, the next steps from the black community as an entirety. The next steps from the White community that supports being apart of the change ...

“Now the way we move as a unit is critical!”

Green’s comments came after the Milwaukee Bucks’ refusal to come out of their locker room Wednesday afternoon for a playoff game against the Orlando Magic sparked a wave of postponements. Two more NBA playoff games scheduled for Wednesday night soon were called off, which inspired players in other leagues to follow the NBA’s lead.

Sunday’s news that police in Kenosha, Wis., shot Jacob Blake, 29, in the back seven times as he tried to get into his vehicle prompted the Bucks’ decision to sit out.

The Warriors issued a statement Wednesday night calling Blake’s shooting “appalling” and voicing support for players for “taking actions designed to shed light” on racial injustice. Several of Green’s teammates took to Twitter in the wake of the NBA postponements.

“For those who don’t understand what is going on, it will always be bigger than basketball!” forward Eric Paschall tweeted. “We demand change!!! We demand justice! Have a blessed day!”
