-

The San Diego Padres, in position to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006, had a busy Sunday as they acquired first baseman Mitch Moreland, then reportedly swung deals to add catchers Austin Nola and Jason Castro and pitchers Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla.

The moves came a day after San Diego acquired reliever Trevor Rosenthal from the

Kansas City Royals.

Baseball’s trade deadline in Monday.

The Padres got Moreland, who is hitting .328 with eight homers, from the Boston Red Sox for minorleaguers Jeisson Rosario and Hudson Potts. With fourtime Gold Glover Eric Hosmer in place at first base with the Padres, Moreland is likely to get most of his atbats as a DH.

“Being able to add his makeup, character, that will blend in really well into this clubhouse,” Padres manager Jayce Tingler said. “There’s a positive buzz, energy going around.”

Nola, Adams and Altavilla were acquired in a sevenplayer trade that sends outfielder Taylor Trammell, infielder Ty France, catcher Luis Torrens and righthander Andres Muñoz to the Seattle Mariners.

The deal for Castro reportedly involves sending pitcher Gerardo Reyes, 27, to the Los Angeles Angels. The righthander was 40 with a 7.62 ERA in 27 games for the Padres in 2019, striking out 38 and walking 11 in 26 innings.

Givens, 30, has allowed two runs over 13 innings this season with 19 strikeouts and two walks.

1 Baltimore traded former A’s lefthander Tommy Milone to the Atlanta Braves for two players to be named.

Milone was 14 with a 3.99 ERA over six starts in his first season with the Orioles.

1 The Chicago Cubs acquired Jose Martinez from the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named and cash.

Martinez, who can play first base or the outfield, hit .239 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 24 games with Tampa Bay.

Injury report: The New York Mets put pitchers Steven Matz and Dellin Betances on the injured list because of shoulder discomfort and lat tightness, respectively. Also landing on the IL was Chicago White Sox pitcher Gio Gonzalez (groin).

Briefly: Cubs catcher Josh Phegley and Braves first baseman Matt Adams were designated for assignment . ... The Red Sox released infielder Marco Hernandez . ... Righthander Jared Eickhoff, released by the Padres last week, was signed by the Texas Rangers and sent to their alternate training site.
