Fires’ smoke affects events in Portland

-

A National Women’s Soccer League game between the Portland Thorns and the OL Reign has been postponed again until the end of the month because of poor air quality from wildfires.

The game in Portland had been moved from Saturday to Tuesday because of smoke from wildfires that have been raging across the West. The forecast does not call for improving conditions, so the game was postponed again until Sept. 30.

Twotime Portland Classic winner Brooke Henderson said she was withdrawing from the LPGA event at Columbia Edgewater Country Club because of smoky conditions. The Portland Classic is Thursday through Sunday, but the course and practice facilities were closed Monday because of smoke. College football: With chances of a Big Ten fall season slipping away, two top Ohio State players opted out to prepare for the NFL draft.

Cornerback Shaun Wade, a preseason AllAmerican and likely firstround pick in the 2021 draft, announced his decision Monday on Twitter, saying the Big Ten waited too long to decide what to do on playing. Wyatt Davis, a guard who is another potential firstrounder, opted out Friday. Soccer: Paris SaintGermain “strongly supports” Neymar’s claim to being racially abused by a Marseille player in their feisty match Sunday, the French champion said.

Neymar was one of five players sent off after an injurytime brawl at Parc des Princes. The Brazil forward was caught on video jabbing the back of Alvaro Gonzalez’s head.

Neymar told officials he was racially abused. In its own statement, Marseille, which won 10, said Gonzalez “is not racist.”

Golf: Sam Horsfield tested positive for the coronavirus without any symptoms, knocking him out of the U.S. Open after traveling from England. Scottie Scheffler, the leading PGA Tour rookie of the year candidate who tied for fourth in the PGA Championship in San Francisco last month, withdrew Sunday after a positive test.
