Chadwick Tromp fulfilled a dream in 2020 when making his majorleague debut and playing a part in the Giants’ playoff push, but he’ll be shelved the rest of the regular season with a strained right shoulder.

Tromp was placed on the 10day injured list Tuesday, and the Giants called up Tyler Heineman from the team’s alternate site in Sacramento as the second catcher behind Joey Bart.

Tromp, who was Johnny Cueto’s personal catcher and a power threat at the plate, was injured Sunday when diving back to first base on a pickoff attempt. He immediately felt a problem in the shoulder but remained in the game.

Initially listed in Monday’s lineup, Tromp was scratched and replaced by Bart, who has had a rough time catching Cueto. The Giants lost 72, and Cueto gave up all of Colorado’s runs.

MRI exam results Tuesday showed Tromp’s muscle strain.

The Giants’ catching depth had been tested already, with Buster Posey opting out of the season. Heineman and Rob Brantly began the season as the Giants’ catchers, but Tromp quickly replaced Brantly and has been the backup until now. He was hitting .213.

Yaz improving: Mike Yastrzemski is engaging in more physical activity, which is a good sign for the Giants, and manager Gabe Kapler said he’s “optimistic” about the outfielder rejoining the Giants in the regular season.

Shelved with a strained right calf, Yastrzemski did some “light assisted running on the treadmill,” Kapler said. “That’s a positive note. Moving around much better.”

Yastrzemski has been playing catch and taking swings in the cage as well as dry swings and is hitting off a tee, and Kapler said he was “trending in right direction.”

Briefly: The Giants will check into their Bay Area hotel Wednesday, their bubble for the final days of the season, following Major League Baseball guidelines . ... Justin Smoak was released a day after he was designated for assignment.
