Will Pats’ virus issues affect 49ers’ schedule?

- STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES — Eric Branch

The 49ers will visit the Patriots on Oct. 25. Maybe?

The Patriots canceled their practice Friday because of a positive coronavirus test and they were in the process of confirming a second positive test, ESPN reported.

Their game against Denver on Sunday, which already had been pushed back a week because of positive tests on the Patriots, is now in jeopardy of being postponed again. If so, that could result in adjustments to New England’s schedule and those of their upcoming opponents, including the 49ers.

Last week, for example, the postponement of the BroncosPatriots game caused a scheduling snowball effect: The Dolphins, Jaguars, Jets and Chargers had to adjust their schedule.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers will be ready to adjust.

“That’s kind of how we prepared coning into this year that you’re going to have to adapt to a lot of situations you’re not sure about,” Shanahan

said. “I think that’s the main thing you’re ready for. Don’t freak out and get overwhelmed with it. Expect it to happen. It’s a matter of time before it does happen. And when it does, embrace it and do it the best you can.”

The 49ers ( 23) might welcome any change in their upcoming schedule as their next seven opponents have a combined record of 267.

Briefly: Odell Beckham Jr. missed another practice with Cleveland because of virus protocols, but quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has been slowed this week by sore ribs, appears ready to play in Sunday’s AFC North matchup against unbeaten Pittsburgh. ... Detroit ruled out cornerback Desmond Trufant ( hamstring) for Sunday’s game at Jacksonville and has put tight end Hunter Bryant ( hamstring, concussion) on injured reserve. ... Seventime Pro Bowl receiver Julio Jones returned to practice as a limited participant and hopes to play when Atlanta visits Minnesota on Sunday.
