How the presidential race changed over time

President Trump held big leads in battleground states at 11 p. m. on election day as most states starting counting with in- person votes from that day, which was the voting method urged by Republicans. Those leads, however, dwindled overnight and two states in which Trump led were actually called in favor of Joe Biden the following day. Democrats urged people to vote by mail and as the mail- in ballots were counted, Biden made up substantial ground, even pulling into a virtual tie with Trump in Georgia by Thursday night.
