Expansion Nashville upends Toronto FC

-

Daniel Rios scored in the 108th minute and expansion Nashville beat Toronto FC 10 on Tuesday night in East Hartford, Conn., to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Rios followed Hany Mukhtar’s shot that Toronto goalkeeper Quentin Westberg got a hand on, and tapped it into the back of the net. Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis sealed it with two closerange saves in the 121st minute, earning his MLS-leading 10th shutout of the season.

Nashville, which had three goals called back for being in an offside position, became the first expansion team to win two MLS Cup playoff games and will face Columbus on Sunday.

Toronto, which has played its recent home games in East Hartford because the Canadian government won’t allow it to play in Canada, was the first MLS team to clinch a playoff spot this season, but closed by losing four of its last five games.

Revolution 2, Union 0: Adam Buksa and Tajon Buchanan scored four minutes apart — both on assists from Carles Gil — in the first half and the visiting New England beat Supporters’ Shield-winning Philadelphia.

New England will play No. 4 seed Orlando on Sunday in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Buksa headed in a free kick in the 26th minute for his seventh goal of the season. Buchanan cut back his defender at the corner of the 18yard box to send a shot under MLS goalkeeper of the year Andre Blake for his third goal this season against the Union.

Gil nearly scored in the 52nd when his chip shot hit the crossbar.

It was the sixth meeting between the clubs this season — with the Union going unbeaten in the previous five, including four victories. The Revs hadn’t beaten the Union since the 2017 season.

Champions League: Juventus, Barcelona, Chelsea and Sevilla all reached the knockout stage of the Champions League with two matches to spare.

Alvaro Morata scored in injury time to send Juventus through with a 21 win at home over Hungarian team Ferencvaros, ensuring the Italian champions finished at least second in Group G.

Barcelona tops the group and booked its spot in the last 16 for the 17th straight season with a 40 victory over Dynamo Kyiv despite the absence of Lionel Messi, Frenkie de Jong and a number of others.

United States right back Sergino Dest, 20, scored his first goal for Barcelona. Another American, 19yearold forward Konrad de la Fuente, came on as a substitute in Kyiv for his debut.

Both Chelsea and Sevilla left it late to advance from Group E. Olivier Giroud came off the bench to score an injurytime header as Chelsea won 21 at Rennes, and Munir El Haddadi scored in the final minute of stoppage time as Sevilla defeated Russian newcomer Krasnodar 21 away.

Elsewhere, Erling Haaland’s two goals put Borussia Dortmund in touch of reaching the last 16 with a 30 win at home over Club Brugge.
