Bears fall to Beavers in opener

Matt Bradley scored a gamehigh 21 points, but Cal lost 7163 at Oregon State in a nonconfere­nce game to open the season Wednesday.

The nonconfere­nce matchup materializ­ed because of the coronaviru­s issues that prevented Colorado State from playing in the fourteam event. Northwest University, an NAIA school, is the other team and will face the Bears on Thursday and the Beavers on Friday.

On Wednesday, Oregon State limited Bradley to a 5for16 performanc­e from the floor, including 1for7 from beyond the arc. Bradley did go 10for11 at the foul line.

Warith Alatishe scored 16 points and Ethan Thompson had 15 for the Beavers.

Memphis 73, St. Mary’s 56: In the Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls, S.D., the Gaels scored the game’s first eight points, but the Tigers took control thereafter. Boogie Ellis went 6for7 from beyond the arc en route to a gamehigh 24 points for the Tigers. St. Mary’s went 1for18 on 3point tries. Matthias Tass, who missed most of last season because of a torn ACL, led the Gaels with 15 points. St. Mary’s faces Northern Iowa on Thursday.

UMass Lowell 76, USF 68: In the “Bubblevill­e” event in Uncasville, Conn., Khalil Shabazz poured in a gamehigh 31 points but the Dons still fell to the River Hawks, who got 22 points and eight rebounds from Obadiah Noel. USF went 5for26 from 3point range.

Santa Clara 62, Idaho St. 49: In the opening game of the Bronco Invitation­al at the Leavey Center, Josip Vrankic scored a gamehigh 24 points and Santa Clara won in part by scoring 23 points off the Bengals’ 20 turnovers.

SimpsonSan Jose State canceled: The game scheduled for the Event Center was canceled because of “an issue preventing Simpson from adhering to Mountain West COVID19 testing protocols,” according to the Spartans’ website. Women

San Jose State 56, Cal 48: At Haas Pavilion, the Bears led by 11 midway through the second quarter before the Spartans rallied. San Jose State scored 22 points off Cal’s 23 turnovers. Tyra Whitehead had a doubledoub­le (12 points, 10 rebounds) for the Spartans. Dalayah Daniels had a doubledoub­le (10 points, 12 rebounds) for the Bears.

UC Davis 82, USF 75: Ioanna Krimili went 6for8 from beyond the arc and scored a gamehigh 22 points, but the visiting Dons lost. Cierra Hall had a doubledoub­le with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Aggies.

VCU 87, St. Mary’s 79: In an event hosted by Arizona State, the Gaels got 16 points from Tayla Dalton but fell short against the Rams.
