Cancellations wreaking havoc

- By Anne M. Peterson

The Thanksgiving weekend is normally devoted to endofseason rivalry games in the Pac12 but — like everything else — it’s different this year.

The Big Game between Stanford and Cal is going to go on as planned Friday. The rivalry game between Oregon and Oregon State, formerly known as the Civil War, was also still set for Friday.

But the Apple Cup between Washington and Washington State was canceled. The Huskies scrambled to schedule a game with Utah for Saturday night — made possible because the Utes’ Sunday meeting against Arizona State also was canceled because of coronavirus issues in the Sun Devils’ program.

And on Thursday, the nonrivalry game between Colorado and No. 19 USC also was canceled because of positive virus tests for the Trojans.

Colorado (20) immediately booked a replacement game against San Diego State in Boulder on Saturday afternoon. The Aztecs were idle because their Friday game against Fresno State was canceled Sunday because of positive tests for the Bulldogs.

Keeping up? There is also one other nonrivalry game this weekend, Arizona at UCLA, on Saturday.

And, let’s not forget, Thanksgiving weekend does not denote the end of the regular season this year. The Pac12 still will be playing well into December.

It’s all a jumble. So here’s a look at the current status of the rivalry games from around the Pac12:

No. 9 Oregon at Oregon State: The 124th edition of the rivalry is on so far but there’s a big change this season in that the game is no longer called the Civil War. The two teams mutually decided over the summer to drop the nickname after a campaign by former Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon, out of concerns that “Civil War” represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery.
