Backup’s TD run propels Beavers past No. 9 Ducks

-

Taking his first college snap after starting quarterback Tristan Gebbia limped off the field with an injury, Chance Nolan scored on a 1yard, fourthdown run with 33 seconds left to give host Oregon State a 4138 victory over No. 9 Oregon on Friday night.

Gebbia appeared to have scored on third down, but the officials put the ball on the 1. After Gebbia limped to the sideline while the play was under review, Nolan — a transfer from Saddleback College in Southern California — entered and sneaked into the end zone on the first play of his Oregon State career.

“It means a lot to a lot of people, not just the guys sitting in the locker room,” Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith said. “It’s too bad Reser Stadium could not be filled right now and have a win like that because it means so much to so many people, especially our instate kids.”

Jermar Jefferson ran for 226 yards and two touchdowns to help the Beavers (22) win their second straight game. Jefferson has run for at least 100 yards in each of Oregon State’s four games and is on pace to hit 1,000 despite the short season.

Oregon (31) had won seven in a row and three straight over the rival Beavers. The loss dashed the slim hopes the Ducks had of a spot in the College Football Playoffs. Oregon was No. 15 in the first CFP rankings released Tuesday.

Gebbia threw for 263 years and a score and had a touchdown run.

Tyler Shough threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon.

#2 Notre Dame 31, #25 North Carolina 17: Ian Book passed for 279 yards and a score as the Fighting Irish (90, 80 ACC) defeated the host Tar Heels (63, 63).

North Carolina came in averaging 43 points and 563 yards, but finished with a seasonlow 298 yards total offense.

#15 Iowa State 23, #20 Texas 20: Breece Hall scored on a 3yard run with 1:25 left and the Cyclones (72, 71 Big 12) stymied a lastminute drive by the host Longhorns (53, 43) to win.

After Iowa State sacked Sam Ehlinger on third down, Texas’ Cameron Dicker missed left with a 58yard field goal attempt as time expired.
